Glossary

Accessibility The practice of ensuring everyone, regardless of ability, background, or circumstance, can access, use, and benefit from environments, services, and information.

Cultural safety A work environment or engagement space where individuals feel respected, heard, and safe to express their identity, without fear of discrimination or cultural invalidation.

Dignity A baseline expectation of respect, agency, and worth for all people, regardless of role, identity, or circumstance.

Discrimination Unfair or unequal treatment based on characteristics such as race, gender, age, disability, sexuality, cultural background, religion, or other forms of identity.

Diversity The presence of differences in identity, experience, culture, or background, including race, gender, disability, sexuality, class, age, and more.

Equity Fairness in access, opportunity, and support, recognising that different people have different needs. Not the same as equality.

Inclusion Creating conditions where all people feel respected, valued, and able to fully participate, especially those historically excluded.

Intersectionality The recognition that people experience oppression and privilege in complex, overlapping ways: for example, someone may face both racism and ableism simultaneously.

Lived experience Direct, personal experience of an issue, such as racism, disability, migration, poverty, or discrimination, that informs a person’s insight and leadership.

Misconduct Any behaviour that breaches Just Gold’s values, policies, laws, or ethical standards, including dishonesty, discrimination, or abuse of power.

Psychological safety A team or workplace culture where people feel safe to speak up, take risks, and raise issues without fear of punishment or humiliation.

Safeguarding Proactive measures to protect people, especially children, young people, or individuals at risk, from abuse, exploitation, or harm.

Systemic harm Injustice or exclusion that is built into laws, systems, institutions, or cultural norms, not just caused by individuals.

Trauma informed An approach that recognises the impact of trauma on individuals and avoids practices that may retraumatise. It centres empathy, consent, and predictability.

Whistleblowing The act of reporting serious wrongdoing, such as fraud, abuse, or illegal activity, within an organisation, with legal protections in place for the person reporting.
